Recycling of metal material is an essential step in using the resources effectively and decreasing the impact on the environment. The materials are separated by considering the types and sizes depending on the needs which then goes through the recycling process to become a source of production materials. Like, scrap steel which is the main component of steel production melted by Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). The recycling procedures facilitates hard or large materials into small pieces.

Today in this section, we shall be discussing about how the different types of scraps are collected from the scrapyards to be used in the recycling process and the various cutting tools used.

Categories of Metal Scraps and their Cutting Method

Scrap Types:

Scrap metal is divided into two categories: ferrous and non-ferrous. The differentiating trait between the two types of metals is the presence of iron. Ferrous metals contain iron while non-ferrous do not contain the same. Thus, anything that’s made from steel is going to be a ferrous metal.

Another method of classifying steel scrap is to classify it according to the products in which the steel was used before it became scrap. The most important steel scrap sources are automobiles, railroads, ships, machinery, packaging, construction buildings, electric and electronic equipment, etc.

Classifications in Scrapyard:

The different types of scraps used for recycling to produce a new product are as mentioned below:

Tools for Scrap Cutting:

There are numerous ways to shred and cut scraps into small pieces before reprocessing as materials for manufacture. One of them is using oxygen lance to cut those scraps, particularly with high hardness or huge size scraps.

Thermic Lance is a steel pipe with inserted wires and inner pipe that are used for fusing the metals and so on. The principle is that harness the oxidation heat of high temperature by providing the forced oxygen inside an ignited steel tube. Generally, metal tube contains steel wire that stimulates combustion.

  1. An experiment has been carried out to cut steel bar by our principal at the factory using Thermic Lance (Type T & Type W) of steel grade SS400. The findings are as below:

2. Another experiment has been carried out the material being Roller SKD11 with different shapes compared to Steel Bar SS400.

Results of the above experiments show that Type T lance has a better performance with higher proficiency. So, we recommend using type T for cutting general steel scraps in a scrapyard. Type W can be applied for higher melting points like stainless steel, or cleaning purposes.

Conclusion:

There are numerous fundamentals that influence the operation and effectiveness of melting and material for recycling production. This is why we had carried out the experiments internally to share the idea about how to deal with scraps.

We are always at your disposal for extending our support to enhance better performance of our products and their cost effectiveness.
