As the steel production utilizes a lot of fossil fuels, there are also some decarbonization alternatives on the horizon. Almost 6-7% of the greenhouse gas emissions are accounted for the steel industries for emitting CO2. This is the reason, nowadays, the global power system has reached to that level where decarbonization has been achieved in Steelmaking.
Also because of the increasing proportion of steel scraps and carbon dioxide emissions, several countries are switching to EAF for steel manufacturing.
Amongst the many consumable products in steel production, steel pipe is one of them. Mostly, steel mills in their smelting and refining process uses Mild Steel Pipes to manufacture steel. Nevertheless, due to the raise of EAF, alternatives are also put into consideration for better functioning and cleaner world.
Today, we shall discuss more about it in this article.

Use of Steel Pipes for Smelting and Refining Industry
Mild Steel(MS) Pipe, also commonly known as “low carbon pipe”, are steel pipes having low carbon content. As these Mild Steel Pipes lacks the alloying components like that of stainless-steel pipes, there are chances of oxidation (rust) for the iron if not properly coated. However, the presence of alloying elements in mild steel makes it relatively inexpensive when comparing with other steels. The machinability, weldability and price of this steel make it a popular consumer choice.

Calorized Lance (CA Lance):
The CA lance is the specialized steel pipe with calorized coating on the surface of the pipe both inside out which is not only used for smelting and refining steel by blowing oxygen but also is used in injection of lime, carbon and /or other additives. This pipe can also be used to remove slags from the inside of oxygen converters and used in the areas where strong heat resistance, sulfuration, oxidation, vanadium attack, etc. is required.

Usefulness of CA Lance
CA Lance Pipe is the specialized pipe that can last 3 to 10 times longer than normal mild steel pipes varying on the circumstances in which the lance is used. To understand this, a common experiment is usually carried out to understand how the CA Lances are different from normal MS Pipe after using high heat of 3,000˚C flame.
After experimenting the same, it is seen that the normal MS Pipe melted in 20 seconds whereas the CA Lance lasted up to 151 seconds.
Contribution for Improved Environment
All the manufacturing unit must pledge to provide decarbonized environment. Therefore, if we can use CA Lances than other normal MS Lances, then using reduced number of CA lances would contribute to lesser carbon dioxide emission in the environment which will ultimately help to save the earth.
Also, CA Lances requires lesser time as compared to other lances which reduces the working time in front of EAF and at the same time increases efficiency. This also provide safeguards to the workers.
Therefore, we can say that the use of CA Lances can also help to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment in a different way.
